What is a Proton Pump Inhibitor?

An old man holding stomach with pain

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are types of medicines that people use to help with stomach and esophagus problems as well as ulcers but allegedly cause serious side-effects. Many Nexium lawsuits have been filed in courts across the country.   This group of medicine helps reduce gastric acid production which causes acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and related problems.  There are a group of different drugs available in the PPI classification group, but there is no proof that one works better than the others.

PPIs were created in the 1980s.  Through the years, they have been advanced enough to help heal stomach and esophagus issues by limiting the amount of acid produced in the body.  In the U.S., there are many approved proton pump inhibitors such as Prilosec, Prevacid, Dexilent, Protonix, and Nexium.  The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approves all medications that are safe for consumer use.

PPIs are usually pill form.  When entering the bloodstream, they focus on the acid-forming cells in the stomach and get them to stop producing so much acid.  Less acid means that stomach issues and ulcers can heal.  They are called “inhibitors” because they block or inhibit a chemical system also known as the “proton pump.”  This system is found in the stomach lining that makes stomach acid.  The use of PPIs offers the user relief from pain caused by acid production.  It may have some side effects, especially with prolonged use, but they are a popular type of medication used by millions today.

These inhibitors do help cure GERD and many other stomach issues as well as ulcers, but they do have some known side effects. Headaches, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, nausea, and constipation have been experienced when taking inhibitors.  They may also increase the risk of infections in the colon, and extended use of inhibitors has been known to potentially cause osteoporosis-related injuries, particularly in the hip, wrists, or spine.  Using the lowest doses and taking inhibitors for the shortest amount of time for treatment can help prevent any negative effects.

PPIs are among some of the most widely used drugs in the world.  Some PPPIs are only available by prescription while others are can get purchased over the counter.  All ages can take PPIS, including children.  Doctors can prescribe these medications to users but will pay close attention to dosage, especially in children.  Taking the recommended dosage can offer immediate relief for ailments such as acid reflux, but issues such as ulcers will take longer to heal and feel relief from.

It is possible that symptoms may reappear after medication is stopped.  Inhibitors are not guaranteed to cure all stomach or esophagus related issues.  If symptoms reappear, please visit with your doctor.  PPIs are not suitable for everyone.  People that have liver problems, who are pregnant or breast-feeding should not take PPIs.

Proton pump inhibitors are widely known as well as used throughout the entire U.S.  These inhibitors offer relief as well as healing for major stomach issues and discomfort with acid reflux.  Not all people can take inhibitors, but those that have taken these medications have experienced less pain and discomfort. However, many are experiencing serious side effects with Nexium including kidney damage and heart attack. Contact a Nexium law firm to learn if you are eligible for compensation for your injuries.
