What is a SGLT-2 Inhibitor?

A man with diabetes holding painful hip

SORRY, WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING THESE CASES

Sodium glucose transporter inhibitors (SGLT2) are medications that have been produced to treat those suffering from type 2 diabetes.  These medications are generally oral drugs used to help reduce the levels of glucose, which is the main cause of diabetes.  They were only recently approved for use in treatment in 2013.  These medications have been assisting and treating people with diabetes for the last few years, but there are many types of medications available to help people. Unfortunately, Invokana gangrene class action litigation is ongoing around the country due to patients suffering severe adverse reactions, including amputations.

These drugs are beneficial to use on specific diabetes ailments.  Many people with diabetes receive some form of insulin because their body is not or cannot produce enough.  These people can take both SGLT2 inhibits as well as insulin or metformin.  Some diabetes medications cannot be combined which can cause the person to not get the full treatment that they require.  These patients can take both SGLT2 and their insulin to receive a more beneficial health treatment.

SGLT2 inhibitors act by focusing their attention on the patient’s kidneys.  Here, they can stop the kidneys from absorbing glucose and returning it to the blood stream.  A person on these types of medications will have excess glucose removed via their urine.  Common medications that are used as SGLT2 inhibitors are Forxiga, Invokana, and Jardiance.  Invokana has received the FDA’s seal of approval for use in the United States.  However, Invokana does have some reported side effects.  Side effects like bone fractures, severe urinary tract infections, hypoglycemia, kidney issues, and yeast infections have been listed.  If a person has suffered an injury or serious side effect, you might want to consider an Invokana law firm to seek compensation for your injuries.  These medications help remove glucose from the patient’s body which can also result in weight loss.  Any persons taking these medications should be aware of the side effects and listen to their doctor.

Diabetes can affect the kidneys.  If the patient is struggling with any form of kidney disease, they should not take SGLT2 inhibitors.  Kidney disease does not allow these types of drugs to accomplish their mission and the results can be disastrous.  Other types of medications and a different approach should be taken with any patients that have kidney disease, and SGLT2 inhibitors should not be considered.
Diabetes care for Americans alone costs millions of dollars.  The disease runs rampant I America, and patients need medication to stabilize their blood sugar.  SGLT2 inhibitors are new to the market, but are already being heavily prescribed and used.  Patients should watch for side effects and report any uneasiness with these drugs or any injury or alleged side effect to their doctor immediately.
